Loyal Union Sampler Blocks 56, 57, 58, 59 and 60/121

Hello everyone,

Here’s another five blocks to add to the Loyal Union Sampler from the book by Jennifer Chiaverini.

First up is Indiana. This one reminds me of a Storm at Sea block but it’s a bit simpler.F-1 IndianaSecond is Iowa Star with some unusual angles. The book gives instructions for making this one in the traditional way or using a foundation paper piecing method. I chose the latter without stitching through the paper.
F-2 Iowa StarThis is a popular one. I’ve seen it in loads of quilts. It’s Jewel Box.F-3 Jewel BoxJonathan’s Satchel is next. Not as easy as it looks!F-4 Jonathan's SatchelFinally, this is Kansas Star. Again similar to a Storm at Sea block (and Indiana above). It’s my favourite in this group because of the lovely star it’s got in the centre which seems to happen by accident due to colour placement.F-5 Kansas StarThis is where I’m at so far. It’s still a lot of fun to sew, especially as I’m almost half finished!

another impressive batch! My favourite is Kansas Star too, with all those squares neatly on a point.
Are you pinning bits of paper with numbers to each block as you go, or using another system to be able to remember placement for finally assembly.

    • I’ve got each row of 11 blocks in a separate plastic wallet. The top one in the pile is the one for the right, working down the pile to the one on the left. You’ve got to have a system 😉

The Kansas Star is my favourite too. They all look fabulous. The more i see of yours the more I think I ought to get going on mine. I look at the book often but that is as far as I’ve got. I know what colours I will use but that’s it. Your choice of colours are so fresh and clean I’m sure it will be a favourite when it is completed.

    • It’s definitely a long term project but the only patchwork one I have on the go at the moment. A half promise to myself to publish five blocks here every week has got me more motivated to finish the blocks at least 🙂 I try to always end with having the next block pieces cut out. Then I’m ready to sew them together when I feel like it.
