Loyal Union Sampler Block 15

Well, that was a bit of a marathon. Far too many Y-seams for my liking and they were too small to get under the machine foot so I ended up having to hand stitch them. This one is called Castle Wall and it’s the 15th block in the Loyal Union Sampler book by Jennifer Chiaverini.

Castle Wall

The next block looks quite straightforward. Slowly but surely.

  1. Yes, I’d rather do y-seams by hand then to struggle with them on the machine. But I really do like the block!

  2. What a lovely block – I don’t think I’ve seen one like that before. You’re on a roll at the moment aren’t you?

Its absolutely beautiful! You must have the patience of a saint! Well, my cushion covers got a lightbulb moment just half an hour ago, I have only put the opening on the side of the Christmas fabric!! I feel a right wally!! At least they are unique though and I wont be making that mistake again haha xxx

  5. A beautiful block. Now you can say you’ve done it and need never do it again – unless you want to, of course!

    • I actually enjoyed it once I knew it was going to look OK.

      • Hand stitching isn’t that bad really, is it? Just not quite as neat and immediate as machine sewing, but you can sometimes achieve better results where space is short.

        • My sewing room is in a complete mess because of this block LOL. I prefer machine sewing because the product is more robust but I did enjoy making this block. If I did it again I’d use thinner fabrics, maybe something like a Liberty Tana Lawn weight would be easier than these Moda solids. Then again, I like solids. Choices, choices…

Top marks for the latest block. It does look great. I wish I had the patience to hand sew. Maybe when /if I get around to making the quilt I will have to hand sew that block YIKES! Takes me hours just to thread the needle. LOL. To be serious the 15 blocks you have done are looking amazing. The colours too give it a whole different look from the dark civil war shades in the book. You have really made it your own.

    • Thank you. Yes, it’s impossible to sew this one on the machine. The seams are too short so you’ll have no choice but to hand sew. It was OK once I’d done the first quarter. This block still took a whole day to sew but it’s done now. When are you going to start ?😉
