Another Happy Dance

Hi everyone,

Ta-daaaaa! Here are some photos of my finished quilt which I promised to share with you the other day. I hope you like it.

f2f Finished

If you visit and read this blog regularly you will know that I’ve been participating in a block swap with eleven other ladies who live all over the world. The swap, called Foot Square Freestyle, was organised by Kate and Sue. We were asked to choose a colour scheme for the blocks we’d like to receive and I chose bright blues and purples.

My original plan was to set the blocks on point but the quilt would have been way too big. My finished quilt has turned out to be a very usable 82 inches square. I tried to achieve a stained glass window appearance by adding the thin black sashing and broad frame. I’m really happy with the overall effect.

The backing is a rich purple print and the quilting is simple, so as not to obliterate the strong lines of the blocks. I wanted this quilt to be squishy and snuggly because it is going to be used.

Here are a few photos showing each quadrant.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers, Kate and Sue, and all of the other ladies who sent me these beautiful blocks. I couldn’t have made this without you. It has been so much fun to be part of this group. I’ve already made my final blocks to send all the way to Australia, so apart from tidying up a few loose ends on my own quilt, that’s me done. I look forward to seeing all of the other F2F quilts as they appear in the gallery during the coming months.

Come on ladies, if you’ve received all of your blocks, make a run for the finish line. It feels so good to be Happy Dancing again 🙂

oh wow!!! this looks fabulous Avis! All the blocks have come together so well, with the black sashing – a great idea ot make colours pop. And I love the bright purple you used for the backing fabric. Well done on such a magnificent assembly and quilting job – you have a wonderful lush quilt to snuggle under there.

  5. Images like this remind me just why we’re doing F2F! As only the second quilt to be completed, this is a memorable event, and your happy dance is fully justified – it’s absolutely gorgeous. Please may I have the main photo to add to the F2F gallery page?
It’s going to be such a lovely, cosy quilt for cold evenings. I’m really looking forward to getting mine started now, even if I do have to wait for May…

    • It is very me isn’t it? I asked for bright blue and purple and then gave hints that I like solids and blenders and traditional blocks best. The rest was up to the other swappers and they did so well 🙂

  14. It looks terrific Avis! I see you changed out the center square in one of the blocks I made. It looks better now. ;- ) I need to get on the ball and get my blocks together. Just can’t face a project that big at the moment!

    • Yes, I emailed about changing the green centre when I received your parcel. You’d supplied the most gorgeous blue fabric and I couldn’t resist using it. The green square will be used in another project as it is equally lovely. As it was the only green in all the blocks I had to swap it. I just thought today that I could have used half the squares for the front and half for the back, making a reversible quilt that would have been easier and quicker to make. Why do I always think afterwards?

  18. Well done to finish while the block swap was still going. Everyone must have been very punctual.
That is a very good size, and I agree that it is hard to beat something simple like a stipple when you want the colours to be the star.

    • I did consider white sashing at an early stage but when I asked friends what they thought, they all said to use black. I’m happy I followed their advice 🙂
