Spring is in the air!

Hi everyone,

Spring is definitely in the air here in the sunny North-East. We must have had at least a whole week of sunshine over the Easter holiday!

Sunshine makes me want to sew bright colours. So here is my latest creation. I hope you like it. I tried to make the coloured chevrons pop using two shades of the same colour for each band and it seems to work.

I densely quilted the white areas and contemplated quilting with the relevant colours on the chevrons but decided against to keep it crisp. Less is more Smile

The colours are actually much brighter in real life.

Following the last post about my red, white and blue sampler, I received some emails about machine stitching the binding. The method I used was to prepare the binding strips at two and a quarter inches wide. Press in half along the length. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt through the raw edges of the quilt and fabric strips. Turn the binding to the back so the back edge is just past the front edge of the binding (you will be able to feel this). Sew to the back with a zipper foot and take care not to catch the front of the binding with the stitches. I didn’t use pins. I never use pins! There is no need. Just keep an eye on it. It’ll be just fine Smile

That’s it for today. I’ve just received a parcel and can’t wait to get inside!!

  5. I am so glad you chose the “less is more” route!! The stitching is so perfect and “crisp” describes this to a “T”…….along with ‘gorgeous’, ‘sunny’, ‘happy’, etc…………………

  8. Nice work. I find it meditative to hand sew binding even though I would generally go for the machine every time. Funny that.

    • I love to hand sew the binding too and for me it is definitely the best finish. In fact, hand sewing the binding is my favourite part of making a quilt. Trouble is, time is so short at the moment so it is a close second best for now 🙂

Those colours really do POP Avis. It looks fantastic. It certainly does look great without covering those coloured chevrons with quilting. Very fresh and bright. I love it. 🙂 Enjoy your parcel opening.

    • To tell you the truth…..I started to quilt the chevrons and pulled it out. Luckily, I realised quickly that it wasn’t going to look good so it didn’t leave any needle holes 🙂

  12. Gorgeous Avis…. In fact I think this is my favourite so far. The colours remind me of beach huts and ice cream.

  13. I still haven’t been brave enough to try a completely machine-bound quilt, but I too only use pins when binding to make sure that the spots where I join strips do not land on a corner. As for the rest, I do as you say: just keep an eye on it.
I love the happy rainbow colours.

    • I only did the last two by machine as time is very short at the moment. I much prefer to hand stitch the binding.

  15. Oooh this does look like a good method, I might try this if I don’t wimp out and just hand sew it! (I’m making a quilt for a baby due on 14th September, but worry it might arrive earlier!)

    • I love to hand sew a binding as the finish looks so much better. However, if the quilt is going to be washed and tumbled a lot, machine sewing is more robust. If I’m short of time I now machine sew. I watched lots of Youtube videos on machine binding but none of them worked for me until I used the zipper foot. Good luck if you try it. I’d love to know how you get on 🙂
